Top 5 Things to Do in the DMV Area During Winter

1.) Celebrate the Chinese New Year Parade
This February 1st is the beginning of the year of the Tiger. Not only is the celebration annual, but due to the pandemic, 2021's celebration was postponed. So, this year should be extra fun!

At the parade, you'll find yourself immersed in Chinese culture, elegant colors of red, and, to top it off, a terrific firework show. You might even be able to taste some incredible foods and who knows, maybe you'll learn something new.

2.) DC Sporting Events
While the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Football Team are sadly eliminated from playoff contention in the NFL, there are still plenty more teams to enjoy in the DMV area. Notably, a Washington Capitals game would be a perfect winter adventure or a night on the town. After all, it's cold and hockey is played on ice!

In addition to the Caps, enjoy the WNBA and the NBA with the Washington Mystics and the Washington Wizards. The nation's capital and its surrounding area are filled with enough sports teams and events to dot your calendars for months to come.

3.) See the Sights
This might sound cliche, but the DMV area has some of the best and most historical sights to see in the country. Not only is the Mall located in DC, but just a stone's throw away in Virginia, one can see Arlington Cemetery, the home of George Washington, Mount Vernon, and much, much more.

In addition to these landmarks, Washington D.C. is also host to incredible museums such as the United States Holocaust Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian of Air and Space and Natural History. Plus, being heated indoors is a great way to kick the cold.

4.) Skiing & Snowboarding
Yes, skiing & snowboarding. Within a 200-square mile radius of the DMV area, one can find numerous ski resorts nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. While these slopes may not live up to the immense size and powder of the Rockies, they offer a lot for beginners and experts alike.

Cross country skiing is also a popular way to get outside and enjoy the wintertime. For example, Liberty Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania is only 78 miles from the DC area, a little over an hour's drive. Plus, mountain-blanketed states like West Virginia aren't too far away for a perfect wintery wonderland get-away.

5.) Food
Nothing brings comfort like food to a cold, hearty winter. Luckily, the DMV area is renowned for its culinary variety. Not only do the areas immediately surrounding DC and Baltimore have incredible restaurants and respected chefs, but so do the small towns dotting the hills beyond the suburbs.

Driving closer to the mountains, you can find fantastic mom n' pop cafes and restaurants in towns like Marshall, VA.
