The 25:1 Ratio in Cannabis Beverages
Due to Virginia’s hemp regulations, our higher-dose beverages are formulated with a 25:1 CBD to THC ratio (250mg CBD to 10mg THC). This ratio is featured in products like our Squeeze the Daze Lavender Lemonade, Ginger Lime Soda, and Root Beer.
While this ratio complies with regulations, it’s not our ideal choice. High levels of CBD create significant challenges in flavor and texture. At 250mg per serving, CBD introduces:
- Pronounced bitterness
- A dry, chalky texture
- A heavy, lingering finish
The main challenge in cannabis beverages is that increasing CBD content makes it exponentially harder to maintain a clean, smooth flavor profile.
Precision Dosing in Low-Dose Drinks
Our lower-dose beverages, such as Nova Hemp Coffee, Grape Daddy Fizz, and Root Beer (2mg THC), are designed for a lighter experience, but they present a different challenge: precision dosing.
Cannabinoids are not naturally water-soluble, making them difficult to evenly distribute in larger volumes. Analytical testing confirms that precise dosing is harder to achieve at lower concentrations. For example, while our 2mg THC drinks often test at 1.5–1.7mg, our 10mg THC beverages consistently test at 9.5mg—proving higher doses are easier to formulate accurately.
The Move to In-House Nano Emulsions
Initially, we used third-party water-soluble ingredients, but this approach caused inconsistencies in cannabinoid distribution, unreliable test results, operational complexity during production, and poor mouthfeel
To address this, we now produce our nano emulsions in-house. Rather than blending cannabinoids separately, we create a full-strength emulsion and incorporate it directly into the batch. This process improves dosing accuracy, enhances stability, and ensures consistent results across all products.
Flavor Formulation: Emulsifiers and Acids
Incorporating cannabinoids into a liquid is just the first step; ensuring great flavor requires precise chemistry. Many cannabis beverages rely on quillaja extract (a foaming emulsifier) and citric acid for pH adjustment. However, these additives can cause bitterness, astringency, and flavor imbalances.
For instance, traditional root beer uses phosphoric acid. Adding citric acid through an emulsion creates clashing acid profiles, amplifying bitterness. Similarly, quillaja extract may contribute noticeable bitterness at higher concentrations.
Our solution:
- We use sunflower lecithin instead of quillaja.
- We avoid unnecessary citric acid adjustments.
- We match the emulsion to the beverage’s natural acid profile.
This approach creates a smoother mouthfeel, reduces bitterness, and eliminates astringency.

After production, cannabinoids naturally degrade over time. Factors like heat, oxygen, and light exposure can significantly reduce potency, even in sealed cans. Higher storage temperatures accelerate this process, emphasizing the importance of shelf stability and proper packaging.
